You Can Learn to Hula, Too!
You've seen the swaying hips and sultry dances of the Islands, and you can learn to
dance them, too!  Hula isn't hard, it just takes practice.

Other (non-dance) Classes:

Beginning Hawaiian Hula for men, women, and teens (ages 12-up) with little or no
Hula background, or for those who want to take more time learning new dances.

This class will introduce the various hula styles, form and posture, and basic steps.  
Emphasis is on building familiarity and a good foundation of hula basics.  Specific
dances will be learned, but the majority of class time will be spent practicing proper
form and technique.

This class will also introduce Hawaiian words, hula vocabulary, and Hawaiian culture
through stories.

Hula is a great, low-impact cardio activity!  Wear comfortable workout clothes, and
check with your doctor first if you have any health concerns.

Beginning Hula

Intermediate Hawaiian Hula for men, women, and teens (ages 12-up) with a
foundation of basic hula steps, and who want to advance quickly to build a repertoire
of performance numbers.

This class will expect proper form and posture, and students will develop grace and
style in their dances.  Each class will have a short warm-up exercise of basic hula
steps, and then move quickly into reviewing previously-learned dances and learning
new dances.  Students will also have opportunities to practice chanting and using
rhythm implements.

Hula is a great, low-impact cardio activity!  Wear comfortable workout clothes, and
check with your doctor first if you have any health concerns.

Hawaiian Hula for advanced hula students.  An audition is required; students are
accepted by invitation only.

This is a small group class for advanced dancers with a strong hula background to
share
mana'o (interpretations) and dances. Students will learn collaboratively.  Class
members will also develop showmanship and other performance skills.

This class is held every Saturday except the third week of each month, at 10:00 am.

Intermediate Hula

The Hui Kane (men's club) is for men and boys 12 and older, and includes instruction
in the masculine, chest-slapping, intimidating, spear-carrying dances and chants of
Polynesia (New Zealand, Fiji, Tahiti, Samoa, and Tonga).

Students will learn to use the Maori taiaha and other various male hula implements,
such as fighting sticks and war clubs.  Practice implements will be available, but
students are encouraged to bring their own.

Students will also learn the various learn drumming techniques of the Polynesian
cultures, particularly of Tahiti and Hawaii.

Hui Kane

Tahitian, Samoan, Cook Island, Maori, and other Polynesian dances for women and
girls ages 12 and older.  Learn the subtle differences between the island dances,
including the fast-shaking tamure, the alluring aparima, the playful siva, and others!

Bring a pareu or scarf to tie around your waist, and wear comfortable clothing to
dance in.  This class is a real workout - you'll be sweating!  Polynesian dance is a
great, low-impact cardio activity.  Check with your doctor first if you have any health
concerns.

This class is held every Saturday from 8:00 to 8:50 AM, with instructor Lisa Smith.

Keiki Hula, or Children's Hula, is a fun class for boys and girls ages 12 and under!  
This class will introduce all the different hula implements, and students will learn
different styles of hula for performance.  The instructor combines dance with songs
and storytelling to introduce children to the Hawaiian language and the beautiful
cultures of Polynesia!

This class meets every Saturday, from 9:00-9:50 am, with instructor Lexi Merrill.  For

Keiki Hula

This class teaches basic and conversational Hawaiian vocabulary, pronunciation, and
grammar.  Students will develop a working Hawaiian vocabulary for simple, everyday
introductory conversation, using a variety of teaching methods.  A Hawaiian dictionary
is required and available for purchase.  Other class materials will be provided.

Half of the class time will discuss Hawaiian history from early Polynesian migration
through recent political events, as well as Hawaiian cultural practices through
traditional Hawaiian legends, proverbs, music and chants, and class discussion.

Students will be able to pronounce Hawaiian words, use basic Hawaiian phrases and
courtesies, and have an introductory understanding and cultural awareness of Hawaii
and its place in the world.  Everyone should take this class!

This class currently meets every Saturday from 6:00 - 6:50 AM, but another class
may be scheduled pending student interest.  Please click
